The idea of deliberate practice has had a lot of publicity. This is the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to produce someone who is skilled at a particular sport. The original work suggested that the practice had to be high quality, high concentration work that is not intrinsically enjoyable. The work had to increase in complexity steadily, and had to have the main aim of improving performance.

There is good support for the idea that practice, where the work is appropriately matched to the player can produce major gains in performance. There is remarkably little evidence, however, that 10,000 hours has any magical quality. Almost all elite athletes have devoted thousands of hours to their sport and making practices a dour, focused affair may work well with some athletes but will reduce enjoyment and motivation in many others and in some cases lead to them dropping out.
